Henna does NOT cause cancer (but don't forcefeed your rat huge quantities of pure Lawsone)Posted by CAtherine Cartwright-Jones on January 29, 2005 at 10:38:55: In reply to: Another voice from europe posted by Rosetta on January 29, 2005 at 07:27:26: The original article was "Opinion concerning Lawsone Colipa nC146adopted by the SCCNFP during the 16th plenary meeting of 13 March 2001 (http://europa.eu.int/comm/food/fs/sc/sccp/out139_en.pdf)" and was based on a study of rats forcefed huge quantities of pure lawsone. It was bad for their livers. Duh. Ingesting large quantities of pure lawsone does not have much relevance to putting henna on your hair ..... see article below. Henna has Lawsone, yes, but applying it to the skin is NOT the same as eating huge quantities of pure lawsone. Also, that original study has been repudiated a coupla times, in the papers listed below.. Since, much better studies have been done, finding that henna is NOT going to cause cancer, and is vastly safer than commercial hair dye ..... here are the articles that refute the earlier study: An assessment of the genotoxicity of 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone, the natural dye ingredient of Henna.
