It seems a pity that it's either get good henna and permanent results,
or poor henna and temporary results. After all, as Jane is pointing
out, not everyone wants permanent results. Is there no way of
applying good quality henna in such a way that it doesn't last forever?

From my experience (I was using Logona henna), the first henna doesn't
stick quite as well as the following ones. The last few inches of my
hair are a fairly deep red, but I suspect not as red as they were when
originally hennaed (which is four years ago). I think that's the last
henna but one. Then there's a section where it fades into my natural
hair colour, and I think that's the last henna I did (must have been a
while after previous ones as there's a good couple of inches of it).
This is more of a coppery colour, and blends in almost imperceptibly
to my natural bronzey brown colour.
