Very interesting. I remember reading that, at the end of the
eighteenth century, prostitutes dyed their hair black (vs. the "porn
star" white blond of these days) because darker hair was considered
more stunning. Just another piece of haircolor history.

Re auburn keeping hair dark: I can attest to this. My great aunt
began hennaing her dark ash blond/light brown hair in the late 1920s,
and didn't stop until well after her whole head had been gray for a
number of years. As long as I knew her (before she opted for silver
in her 80s), she had beautiful deep auburn hair.
