You can then rinse them under the faucet, blow dry them, and get to see what they look like all blended together up against your head. You can even sharpie a code for the mix on the tape. When I remember, I cut off locks just before a haircut just as long as I expect to cut it for later testing. I take a few from the greyer areas below my ears and a few from the top layer that gets the most sun and wear. Between the two I get a fairly good idea what my latest mix will do.
