Its important to understand that the henna dye molecule binds into the
keratin protein in the hair. Its not going anywhere once it binds.
Its also important to understand that the scales of keratin that make
up hair are different in different people, and that the angle of these
scales reflect light in different ways.

What does acid do to henna? It chews up the cellulose in henna so you
get more dye available. What does acid do to hair? It chews it up
too, so it reflects light more. Alkalines chew up hair better, but
they're lousy for skin and stuff.

The ground level way of expressing that is that some folks have glossy
hair wherein the scales are solid and smooth and stuck down and some
folks don't. Depends on genetics and environment. Think about the
difference between fishline and old rope. Raggedy hair takes up dye
good because its got more points to bind with dye molecules. Glossy
fishline type hair doesn't take up dye as well.

I haven't ever had any problem with shampoos, but I just use
whatever's cheap.
