Its also important to understand that the scales of keratin that make up hair are different in different people, and that the angle of these scales reflect light in different ways. What does acid do to henna? It chews up the cellulose in henna so you get more dye available. What does acid do to hair? It chews it up too, so it reflects light more. Alkalines chew up hair better, but they're lousy for skin and stuff. The ground level way of expressing that is that some folks have glossy hair wherein the scales are solid and smooth and stuck down and some folks don't. Depends on genetics and environment. Think about the difference between fishline and old rope. Raggedy hair takes up dye good because its got more points to bind with dye molecules. Glossy fishline type hair doesn't take up dye as well. I haven't ever had any problem with shampoos, but I just use whatever's cheap.
