That textbook certainly was structured to discourage henna use, by making it appear complex, hazardous, and difficult to determine outcome, as well as a little threatening (need to put on apron, and latex gloves, and handle a double boiler). The PPD dyes by comparison were characterized as being modern, faster, tidier, and with other desirable characteristics of convenience and guaranteed outcome. Students who took for granted, uncritically, what those textbooks said would form a negative opinion of henna. Of course, any student who takes what's in their textbooks as fact, and reads them uncritically is in trouble .......
