: I'm always rather wary of "fragrance oils" since they tend to be,
: well, the equivalent of what "black henna" is to real henna, namely
: full of nasty chemicals (though I doubt with the same health
risks).
: I believe there are some reputable ones out there, however, and if
: something's ok on your skin it should be ok on your hair.
:
: Essential oils are not like vegetable carrier oils (olive oil,
jojoba
: oil, almond oil and the like). They are not greasy, for instance,
but
: are the distilled essences of a plant. FOs are usually chemicals
: dispersed in a vegetable carrier oil, so they are likely to be
greasy;
: I suspect they're also less concentrated, so you'd need to use
more.
: If we're only talking a dozen drops, I doubt it would make a
: difference. If you need several ml before the fragrance takes
effect,
: then might it be a little oily on the hair? I don't really know,
I've
: never used FOs. The other thing I'd wonder about would be chemical
: reactions, but if you can use them in making general toiletries I
: imagine there shouldn't be much of a problem.
:
: But EOs are much nicer! And FOs aren't going to have the same
: therapeutic action on the hair that EOs can. (Biassed, moi?) I
don't
: see much of a reason why FOs shouldn't be fine in hair rinses if
it's
: just to make your hair smell nice, though, so give it a try and see
: what happens.
:
: As for henna, EOs aren't just added for the smell, they are also
used
: to develop the colour (terping), which FOs won't do. I don't know
: about chemical reactions. I suspect they should be ok, but check
with
: one of the people who really know.

Aaah I see... I didn't realize the EOs in the henna mix did
something other than add a nice smell.
As for the amount of FO used in a hair rinse....it would be quite
minimal, certainly no more than you would use of an EO, possibly
less. Judging on some of the EOs and FOs I've had. I'll hafta
start fooling around with some rinses soon I suppose. Sounds like
fun!
*yeah, great, like I really needed another toiletries item to play
with and spend money I don't have on LOL I just love finding new
things to experiment with/become obsessed with.oh boy, can only
imagine how much more henna obsessed I'll be once I finally henna my
hair with success LOL*
