never henna'd

Had a serious allergic reaction to commercial haircolor 4wks ago.
Want to start henna. I would have 40% grey hair, 60% auburn hair if I
did not color. Do I need to let all the commercial haircolor grow
out first? What do I do in the meantime? I don't really want to be
grey until it grows out. After you henna, how do you touch up roots ?
I'm brand new to the whole idea and appreciate all suggestions.
