Hi Joanne,
I'm new to henna too, I just used it for the first time to cover
beginning greys (I'm a natural redhead, had never coloured my hair
with anything before) and I'm very happy with the result.

There's probably all the information you could need here somewhere on
the site; if you spend half an hour browsing you can learn a LOT
here. I am a total believer now, I am so glad I'll never have to
resort to chemical dyes for my hair. I'm really sorry to hear that
you had a problem with them.

Covering a substantial amount of greys with henna is a bit of a
challenge. If you check out the "Mixes" section, there is a new lady
there "Blondie" who used henna to cover grey like yours (about
40/60%) and the results are pretty dramatic! Its very beautiful but
you have to be prepared for a very vibrant orange-red result (which,
btw, is possible only if you use a high quality body art henna). The
good thing about henna is that repeated applications deepen the
colour and you can do your whole head every 4-6 weeks and not have to
worry about roots.

I would recommend you have a good look at the mixes section; the link
labeled "Fia's mixes" gives a really good overview on mixing and
different colour results.

Oh yeah, the other main issue for you is hennaing over the old
chemical job; it ABSOLUTELY necessitates that you get some body art
quality henna to test with and then try some of your hair fall out
(collected from your brush or shower drain) in it to be sure it won't
do anything weird to your hair! Theres a pretty good chance with 100%
natural henna that you'll be okay.

Hope this helps a bit; Keep looking around here, and check out the
rest of this board and the archives; there's a lot of threads on
covering greys...
