ahh... where to start?

Hair is more porus than skin and accepts larger molecules into the
strands than skin does. Hair cells aren't as tightly packed together
as skin cells (think of a hairstrand under a microscope: all rough
and scaly with lots of places for henna dye molecules to lodge)

Dye release: once the henna dye has been released it has a limited
amount of time before it reacts with the air and becomes oxidised and
darkens in colour. After the dye has oxidised the henna molecule is
too big to enter the skin, which is why dye release is so important
for henna body art.
BUT
Hair will still accept the larger oxidised dye molecules. (which is
why you can used body art paste that's past it's prime to colour your
hair with)
so dye release isn't realy an issue when dealing with hair henna. the
more dye the paste releases the more dye can go into your hair.

Use good quality henna for lucious vibrant reds.

hope this helps,
kim
