Different speeds of hair growth

I've got hair I can sit on, and I've been growing out the henna for
the last four years. The odd thing is that there is more henna on the
hair underneath than on the hair on top, if that makes sense. The
hair from the top of my head has only about 8" of henna left to grow
out, but the hair from the lower part of my head has about twice as
much as that.

Why is this? Is my hair growing at different speeds? Is the henna on
top fading slightly?
