Indigo hair dye question

Do you dye with henna first to condition or for color? My husband's
hair is salt and pepper and he wants to dye it back to it's original
black. He isn't very comfortable with having red hair until it's re-
dyed. If the henna is for conditioning can I use Neutral henna? How
long do i have to wait after dying with henna to add the indigo.
Sorry if this info was on the site somewhere. I looked but didn't
find it. Thanks again.
