When the Persians went galumphing off towards China in the T'ang dynasty, they were startled by the "purple beards" .... indigo and henna dyed beards. Those are nice references because it places henna/indigo hair dye in place and time! I've got a monster stack of books laid out to do the "history" section, which will be a chronology of hennaed hair references in artifact and text. (hennaed hair punishable by death in Spain in 1560's, and one case where it was prosecuted in England!) .... ..... and evidence of the way the synthetic hair dye industry increasingly put out disinformation about henna in the 1900's.
