Can I use Henna on my previously dyed hair

My hair is dyed dark brown (my natural hair color is a very brassy
medium brown). I would like to stop using chemical dyes, as my hair
has become too porous to hold the color well and I no longer want
to "fight" the red in my hair). How long would I have to wait to use
henna? Must I wait until all of the color is grown out?
My ideal haircolor would be a deep mahogany or black cherry.
