Do the: additives themselves stain the hair (something like red wine or : cranberry juice or whatever), or do they actually alter the henna : itself. I just can't imagine hair turning brown if one were to put : coffee on it, so why would it turn more brownish if it is added to : henna. If it is because of staining ability of these things, I : cannot imagine the effect lasting very long at all. I have to admit to being a little bit skeptical about the effect of adding things to the mix, in terms of its ability to alter the colour outcome. Just because I so enjoy it, and am lucky enough to afford to do it, I have tried countless test mixes on my hair, both harvested and on my head! I have bought samples of at least 4 different "kinds" of henna (all body art 100% natural; just different origins, ie, yemen, pakistani, etc.) and mixed them up with just about everything I could think of and the results are always more or less the same! Its almost comical really. I have been able to detect very subtle differences with some add-ins (for instance, I use red wine and cloves, which does cause a subtle darkening) but for the most part, no real difference. Still I'm sure most people swear by their add-ins, and I hate to dispute the possibility that they can make a difference. But I think that unless the substance posesses the ability to stain hair on its own, its not likely to make a real difference in the henna. The henna itself, as far as I understand, can only produce one colour: orange (which oxidises to reddish brown) and thats it.
