It's because of the staining ability of the other stuff, and you're right--it doesn't last as long as the henna usually. Additives also only make subtle differences when mixed with henna--slightly redder, slightly purpler, slightly oranger, slightly browner, etc--in my own experience, though enough that the whole head effect might be more than slightly different from regular henna (like a natural redhead to a henna head is more than slightly different).
