I just found out about this forum and I'm so excited to see: everybody posting their henna info. I am new to henna and have not : used it yet but I really really want to... I had a couple questions. : : I have colored my hair (with Loreal) for the last couple years, : usually about every 2-3 months I touch up the color. Have any of : you that also colored previously experienced any problems when : hennaing? How long did you wait after your last chemical coloring : to do your first henna and how did it turn out? : : Also I was wondering what would be some good suggestions/amounts to : start out with. My hair is a dark auburn-brownish color which I : love, I'd like to keep it close to that color as possible with : henna. My hair comes to a little below my shoulders (top of bra : strap), so I figure about 150 g of henna to start with...? what are : some recommendations for ingredients to add? I was thinking coffee : and cloves...? but I have no idea what amounts of those I would use. : : Thanks! :o) You SHOULD be ok to henna over dyed hair, but do a strand test first, just to be sure - pure, body quality henna is no problem, anything else may have additives that can react badly with dyes already in your hair. Many of us here have hennaed over dyed hair, dyed or bleached over hennaed hair - you name it, so spend some time going through this forum. Lots to learn. To give you an idea of what kind of recipe you may want to use, and how much henna you'll need, go to the mixes section - lots of pictures, tips, and advice there, too. You should be good with 150-200 g. of henna, depending how thick your hair is. A simple lemon juice/henna/splash of olive oil mix is good to start with. Some add coffee, and cloves - in my experience, coffee made my mix (and my hair for a few weeks afterward) smell weird - and not a good weird, either...Cloves smelled great, for the first hour, then made me want to pass out to escape the smell for the next 3 hours. But that's just me. You'll find everyone has their preferences and intolerances, and with a few rounds of henna, you'll find your own way of doing things, too. You can definitely acheive a dark auburn-brownish colour with henna. Each time you henna, it gets richer (and shinier), so even if it's not quite the colour you want at first, keep at it...it'll get there. Just read, read, read - this site is a treasure trove of information.
