Thanks so much for all of the responses. I think my chin-length hair
can handle doing henna the old-fashioned way (without the gel)....
I'll try that next time.

It's hard for me to gauge how it's being taken up by the rest of my
hair as all but the roots started out red (from previous chemical
processes) so it's just maintained a really nice color.

Now I'm excited all over again--I'll be henna'ing again next Friday!
