Should I try henna (nervous newbie is a guy)

I'm a 45-year-old Michigan guy starting to add a fair amount of salty
white to my light brown hair. I don't like the idea of commercial
dyes--I hear they are too harsh on hair.
What does henna do to hair that is light brown and white? Any help
greatly appreciated.
