Will henna work on black hair?

Hi, I have an Asian friend (Vietnamese actually) who wants me to dye
her hair with henna. Since she has naturally black hair, will henna
work on it? The color is dark auburn. Also, she added brown
highlights with a chemical dye about a month ago. Can anyone tell me
what might happen, if anything? Thanks!
