It seems like older/stale or bad crops of henna can give more of an
orange color on lighter hair (probably wouldn't show up much at all
on very dark hair), whereas fresh body art quality henna gives a
brighter red that deepens upon further applications into auburn-like
colors. I haven't experimented with anything but stale poor quality
henna (and yes it did turn my hair orange), so I am not going by my
own experience, just what I have gleaned from others.
