That doesn't mean it will lighten hair, though. If you draw with a yellow crayon on dark brown paper, it doesn't exactly turn the paper yellow. These dyes are all translucent stains. Adding rhubarb root to cassia obovata would show up yellow only on hair that is pale to begin with. Combing lemon juice through hair sitting in the sunshine is the only way I know of to lighten hair, and I can't see that working on just roots.
