How long does it take to get dye release ?

How can I understand dye release ?
I put lemon juice and henna turned brown immediately, I waited for
about 20-22 hours before I put henna on my hair but I didn't see any
change in color. it's about 24 degree in my kitchen.
Do you see any changes in color in henna paste ?
Can it be a problem of henna (stale henna) ?
