Thinking about trying henna...

I've been thinking about trying henna, but my main fear is that my
hair is a bit too dark. I think henna comes from India (does it?),
and my hair is as dark as an Indian girl's, but from reading posts
and stuff I noticed that it's supposed to come out brighter on
lighter hair. I'd like a rich red, not a black with a tiny bit of red
(like commercial semi-permanents). Do you folks think that it's the
right choice? Or would it be too subtle (I'm into the punk scene).
