Maybe try vinegar or citric acid.

Perhaps the lemon oils are irritating. Try vinegar instead. I usecitric acid powder.
Also try mixing it very thick with lemon juice then thinning it out
with water. I also recommend using bottled water and not tap water.
Personally I like tea tree oil for punching up the color a little.
