Please help. posted by staticcat on November 9, 2004 at 01:33:09: : : I was a vegetarian for about a year when I started losing hairtoo. My hands would get all : tangled up in it when I showered. The drain would become completely clogged. Finally I : cut my hair very short and it seemed that the shedding stopped. Eventualy I lost interest in : vegetarianism and grew my hair back. There was no more shedding. It was very odd. And I : had had high hopes that becoming a vegetarian was going to make me healthier. I ate : good things and took vitamins. Got plenty of protein and fat. Who knew? : : : : : : : : Hair loss can be genetic, seasonal, hormonal, nutritional, : : : environmental, stress, or disease related .... : : : : : : If you're really concerned, probably should have a doctor evaluate : : it : : : : : : I did have it evaluated. Both my regular doctor and a dermatologist : : found nothing. I also consulted my gynecologist about possible : : hormonal problems. She ran tests and found nothing either. It's : : definitely not seasonal because this has been going on for a very : : long time. Nutrition, I eat very well and take supplements. Been a : : vegeterian since a teen (now 30's) and this type of thing never : : happened before. As far as genetics, no one in my family has had any : : problems with this, I have inquired. So I am clueless :( I will : : continue to do Henna every 3 - 4 weeks in hopes that it will help and : : at least it can't make it any worse. The worst hair loss I ever experienced was long before I was a vegetarian, but had decided to lose weight. I continued to eat high protein foods, such as meat, and drastically reduced carbohydrates except fruit. About half my hair fell out. As a vegetarian of some twenty years now, I do continue to eat cheese as my major protein source. I also take Omega 3-6-9 capsules. I am nearing fifty years of age, and therefore expect some hair loss, although I had surgical menopause [ovaries left, though] when in my thirties, and breast cancer in my forties. I've found that the Flora Extract of Spring HOrsetail silica caps help with skin, hair, and nails [the liquid suspension gave me a kidney stone]. However - I did experience some hair loss this fall, when I switched from chemicals back to henna use. I'd attribute the hair loss to three reasons: seasonal cause, possible residual chemicals abreacting with the henna mix, but - chiefly, and I stress only in my case - I think using too much lemon juice in the mix was the culprit. I sharply reduced it, with far less itch and far less hair loss, and shall continue to do so until all is as it should be. I also use about five to ten drops of olive oil daily on the hair and scalp. It's a good idea also to do warm oil treatments, with olive or coconut oil, jojoba[a bit pricey], or a combination of your choice. You wrap you head in cling film as for henna and keep it warm -then, wash out. Some also think castor oil helps with hair growth, but I find it too heavy. Sorry for such a long post, but I do empathise and want to help! And as a final bit of information, where stress and intractable depression are involved, I have been on various anti-depressants for some years, and they never had any deleterious effects on me whatsoever,, including my hair. Best of luck to you, and I hope you soon find working help! Katherine
