henna won't gel!

I have used henna before, but it is always such a pain mixing and
rinsing so I thought I'd do the gelled henna mix. Maybe I just didn't
measure carfully, but it would not gel at all. I tried mixing in rice
vineger to make to more acidic and tried putting in more pectin. Well
all I've got now is henna soup(lol). I'm feeling pretty stupid right
now. Is there any way to salvage this and make my henna gel?
