I never saw/felt/smelled anything chemical about it. I won't guarentee its chemical free, but will say I am very certain that there are other plants in their henna and its not 100% pure henna. Out of curiosity I picked up one of their black hennas and compaired the dye release to some photos CCJ posted a while back about what indigo looks like when it releases its dye and it appeared to me to be the same which was another reason I believe they don't add chemicals but other plants to get the colors they sell. And for an over the counter type brand of henna it does give a pretty good color even though by the time it gets to the beauty supply store its probably about had it shelf life wise.
