dye "normally" after henna..?

I've searched the web for some time about this, but found nothing.
My problem is that I've tried henna, and it didn't work out the way
it should've. I know I did smth wrong, but the question is: Can you
dye the hair with so-called "normal" haircolor after you've had
henna in it? The only thing I've found is that once you've had henna
in your hair, you can never go back, it's a one-way street etc.
What would happen if I would put for example a permanent black into
my hair? Would it fall off? Would the color not stay?
