Hi there,

I posted a while back, with a question about my hair releasing red
dye all over the place weeks after I had coloured it. How are you
all?

Well, a few weeks ago I ordered some Jamila henna from the suppliers
page. I followed the instructions as on the mixes page - I boiled
paprika and cloves with lemon juice, let it cool, stirred it through
with a bit of ti trea oil and left it to sit somewhere warm
overnight. Paper left under the plastic bags had turned orange so we
went ahead and used it. I left the henna on for about 6 hours, and
when I took the plastic wrap off the henna seemed to still be that
green colour, and I couldn't notice a dramatic effect. I put this
down to the stuff I used last time having additives in it. Anyway,
when it was all washed and dried it was kind of red, but not that
RED RED RED that I was after. I was slightly disappointed, but
resolved to do it again.

Last week when we were shopping down the road, I found our local
supermarket sells great big packs of henna (imported from turkey it
says) for 1 pound for 250g (as opposed to 8 pounds for 100g of the
Jamlia stuff). At that price, I figured it didn't matter if it was
rubbish and didn't work! As the whole overnight thing didn't seem to
work so well last time, I tried a different tack. I stirred liquid
through when it was still quite hot and put the mix into dishwasher
(hot from when it was last used) for 2 hours or so. This was partly
to test a theory and partly because I'm extremely impatient! ;)
Anyway, The paper had turned slightly orange, and I couldn't see the
scrape away effect, but it stained my fingers quite readily (this
wasn't the case with the first batch). I only left it on for about 3
hours this time, and I could immediately see the difference when I
took the wrap off. It was that RED RED RED - woohoo! Next time I
will try leaving it to sit overnight and see what happens. And my
hair doesn't seem to be leaking as much as it did when I coloured it
with the mix Nazeer stuff in Melbourne.

Anyway, from all of this I have a few theories.

I think that the Nazeer stuff must have had something in it to make
the dye release quicker, because I remember the 'henna' turning
brown and then green underneath. This happened almost immediately -
after 15 mins or so? But, I also think that this quicker release is
what caused the dye to keep coming out of my hair for so many weeks
afterwards?

The other thing I thought was that maybe all the cloves I put in the
Jamila might have killed it? I'm really not sure why this didn't
work - I didn't even get stains on my skin from the spillage. It's
quite obvious that the nasty stuff I bought from the Turkish
supermarket isn't as nice, yet the dye worked much better - almost 4
days later my scalp and hairline is still red LOL.

Anyway, it was all a bit of interesting fun - I'm glad I've found
somewhere to buy henna a lot cheaper (and with instant purchase
satisfaction! LOL)

I'll post photos soon :) We took before and afters.

Amy
