New to HennaPosted by Teena on December 4, 2004 at 09:59:55: I have been chemically dying my hair a medium brown for seven yearsor more but have developed a sensitivity to dyes. This prompted me to start searching for an alternative and I've spent loads of time searching the internet and reading up on everything. To my dissappointment I found that even the "natural" and "herbal" dyes had that dangerous para-phenylenediamine in them. As I'm only left with henna or grey I've chosen henna of course. There are still many many questions I have that I can't seem to find answers to: How fresh does the henna have to be? I know about buying the good quality body art henna but if I buy it a couple months before I dye my hair is that not fresh enough? How many times must I do test strips on my hair? If I get good results one time do I need to retest a week later or few days later before using the henna? What's the best mix for med to dark brown hair? It looks to me like a 50/50 mixture of henna and indigo will do the trick with maybe some walnut added? (I know about the basic mixture of henna and an acidic liquid). There are so many extra things to add to the henna mixture. I'm just looking for what would be the best mix for my hair colour. I want to minimize the red as much as possible without going too dark. My hair is med to dark brown and my new hair growth shows up with a good portion of grey in it. Is the henna going to make my coloured hair darker and will I end up with a obvious lighter area where my grey hair is? With chemical dyes afer I've dyed once I only need to touch up the roots on next dyes. Does that work the same with henna? How long have most people waited until using henna after a chemical hair dye? I've recently just used a chemical hair dye but my roots don't start to show until about 3 weeks to a month. Do some people have to wait longer. I figure I'll need the time just to do testing and get the hang of this new thing anyway. Thanks. I'd appreciate any inforation anyone can give me or if there are more websites or books to check out that would have more info.
