Do strand tests until you get a colour that you like; if it works the first time, then go for it. Not sure about the next question, but have a look at the Mixes page; the chart I've created there may be helpful, as might the list of people who are hennaing over grey. My guess is that if you don't leave the henna on for that long, your hair won't get much darker but the grey is more likely to show as red highlights (which can be very pretty). If you leave the henna on for longer, the overall colour will be deeper but the grey will be better hidden. I think. I think you can start strand testing a month after chemical dyes (consult the Mixes chart, I've listed that one), as long as you're using pure, body art quality henna.
