from blonde to red and back again - possible?

I'm naturally a super-streaky blonde, and have been henna-ing my hair
for several years, but recently have been struck by an urge to see
what I look like with my natural hair color. I've been told absolute
horror stories about what happens when you try to process henna'ed
hair chemically, but my now-8-months-worth-of-roots are driving me mad.

has anyone actually successfully lightened out henna? or can anyone
suggest alternative ways to get it back to something approximating
it's original color? ultimately, I'll probably wind up going back to
my familiar-if-fake bright red tones, but if there's any safe way to
get it vaguely natural for a while, I'd love to know it!
