Changing haircolour - henna or synthetic - need advice

Hi everyone,

For some time (approximately two years) now I have been using henna
to colour my hair (usually dark red). I have used the 'Caca' blocks
from Lush (www.lush.co.uk) but I have also made my own mixtures with
powdered henna. I have also tried those prepackaged henna mixes but
these do not change my haircolour at all, unfortunately. This is what
I want to ask some advice about.
This winter I would like to colour my hair in a dark brown shade
(nearly black) but I am unsure of how to go about it. Prepackaged
henna might solve this problem but I have tried this and for some
reason prepackaged henna mixed do nothing for me. I have considered
going to a salon to get a synthetic dye but I am afraid that this
might react badly with the residue from previous henna colourings
(and I am also reluctant because I have noticed a definite positive
change in my hair when I started using henna - don't want to loose
that).

Basically I have the following questions:
When is it safe to use a synthetic dye again, how long do I have to
wait after my last henna colouring?
What are my options when using henna to create a dark brown (think
deep chocolate or a coffee colour) shade?

My last henna colouring was over two months ago and I really need to
get some colour in quick because greyish roots are starting to show
*gulp*. My current (henna-coloured) haircolour is a deep red. My own
haircolour is a dark ash-blonde, that's why I get grey roots showing
(I'm 23)...
I hope you can help me!

Sincerely,
Nine
