I mean, how could I resist a post entitled "skunk stripe"? (By the
way, I only really lurk these days, so if you want me, put my name in
a header, I'm more likely to spot it.)

I last hennaed in March 2000. My hair is a bit over 37" long (around
long enough to sit on). I think I've got a few inches left to go, but
it's really very difficult to tell because it blends in so well. My
natural colour is medium brown with bronze bits, and I hennaed it to
auburn. I was surprised how few people noticed the two-tone hair; I
often had to hold the ends to the hair near my face to show the
contrast, and by now the red on the ends only shows in certain lights,
and if I wave my hair around at the right angle at that. I think the
henna must have faded somewhat. Curiously, there is a longer length
of henna on the hair growing from the underside of my head than from
the canopy. I don't know whether the hair on top faded more (but then
it's not like I go out often, and I very rarely wear my hair loose
outside), or whether it grows faster.

It's been a surprisingly painless experience. For the first couple of
years, I was basically a redhead, and at some point it shifted back to
being basically a brunette. My hair has retained its fan club
throughout (OK, they're mostly gay men, but still). Admittedly I
mostly wear my hair up unless I'm pootling around the flat (and I live
alone), but on the occasions when I've worn it down and it had an
audience (for instance parties: there's an infamous photo of me
surrounded by gay men, each inhaling a lock of my hair), I can only
think of one time when someone noticed. As a matter of fact, he asked
my whether I'd dyed half my hair, but he always was a rather clueless one.

I also have blonde bits at my temples, and they were only a hassle
when I was hennaing, not when I was growing it out. When I was
hennaing, I had the choice between accidentally missing them and
finding they were so pale they looked like white in contrast to the
red, or managing to get them and turning them orange. But it's not as
if I have highlights that go all the way through my hair, and the
longer my roots were, the less those blonde bits were a problem, as
far as I recall. Semi-hennaing (henna/cassia) mix might have worked,
but on the other hand I might have ended up with orange bits. The
demarcation line was never really noticeable, I had to stand in front
of a mirror in good light and squint and hold bits of hair this way
and that to see it.
