Re: Skunk stripePosted by iris on January 6, 2005 at 19:03:41: In reply to: Skunk stripe posted by Keridwen on January 6, 2005 at 14:49:48: : If I start using strawberry blonde, will my hair get light allover, : or will I end up with a strawberry blonde skunk stripe? the latter - strawberry blonde 'henna' (probably a mixture of cassia and a little bit of henna, maybe some rhubarb) will not lighten, so it will not lighten the part of your hair that is properly hennaed, and it will not lighten your natural dark brown. : Also, has anyone here dealt with growing out henna Elettaria is growing out her henna - still a foot to go after four years, if memory serves me right. : or dealing with : white hair that needs constant retouching--and if so, any tips to how : more easily deal with it? I only have a couple of greys, but I do have platinum blonde streaks at the temples. For some reason it doesn't look too bad if they grow out a bit - the hairs there are so thin and light that my scalp shows through and it kinda looks like they're not there if they show some roots. However, my darker blonde hair shows roots in a less nice way, and when I do those I have to redo the platinum blonde bits as well, because they go horribly yellow if a bit of henna touches them. So, I do a root application every three-four weeks - it's more comfortable for me to do just the roots, less weight on the head, takes less henna, no drips because excess is absorbed by the dry hair. I do henna on all the roots first, then I take salted indigo to get the platinum (that will be yellow after the henna) to a reasonable shade of dark blonde. I apply the indigo to the platinum/yellow bits only. I have to repeat the indigo pretty much every week, because it washes out on me. It is a lot of work, but I always look at henna time as me-time (rather than a chore), so I don't really mind. I've been thinking a lot about good ways to grow henna out, because I know I won't want to stick with it all my life. Seems to me there are three ways to do it without a demarcation line: either gradually decrease the amount of henna applied to the roots, which will be tricky but should work in principle; a strawberry blonde mix should work for that I guess. The other option is to use a temporary dye (the kind you wash out) in the colour of the hennaed bulk of the hair while it's growing out. A lot of upkeep, depending on how often you wash your hair. The third option is to go to a professional colourist and have the henna stripped out, but that would be expensive and damaging to the hair, and tricky for them to do it in such a way that they give you back your own colour in the right places, or a strawberry blonde. Or be brave like Elettaria and just grow it out. It should also fade a bit over the course of a couple of years... I'm hoping Elettaria will come over and tell us how she did the growing out. Iris
