help! bright carrot orange hair disaster!!!!!

Hello all,
I have dark brown hair & use henna regularly to touch up roots, & get
wonderful red highlights. Recently a friend of mine who normally
uses "tahitian blond" commercial die (but hasn't for over 6 months)
wanted to try it on his naturally light reddish blond white-greying
hair. We did a "strand test" overnight & it came out darker red, but
within range. Then we did his whole head for only 1/2 an hour and it
came out a shocking bright carrot orange! He is very dismayed & we
are trying to find out if there is some way to re-lighten it. Would
a peroxide bleaching be OK? I read on your site that saffron will
achieve lighter blond type colours, would this potentially help after
the fact? Any suggestions are very much appreciated!
