Dried out hair after using henna

I just hennaed both my hair and my daughter's and we both ended up
with very dry hair. I've used henna before and it has always made my
hair extremely soft and manageable. Plus, I have soft hair by nature
so it seems that the henna took all of the softness away and replaced
it with dried, icky feeling tips!!! By the way, the henna is Indian
henna from 2002 so I'm just wondering if the age has something to do
with it. Thanks!
