My New Love Affair With Henna!Posted by Shelli on June 21, 2004 at 13:19:30: I first jumped into the henna ring about a month ago and liked it somuch that I hennaed again on Saturday. I have naturally medium to dark brown hair with gray mostly concentrated in a streak at the front of my head and a few gray strands here and there. I am a former chemical dyer, so all except for an inch or two was an auburn color. The first time I used the henna, my hair turned this awesome day glo orange color for a couple of days and then faded to a very coppery red (unlike many others, I WISH I could keep the carrot orange glow going) This second time, the results weren't as dramatic, but probably because it wasn't a new experience to me and I'm used to the color now. I used the other half of the henna mix (henna purchased from Mehendi) that I had frozen right after applying a month earlier. I used only lemon juice and the henna, with no additives or terps to make it smell better. My question is: Is there anything I can add to my henna mix to make it turn more towards a coppery red/orange? As my natural, darker hair color grows out, I would like to retain at least a little of the orangey hue if I can. I really like it and it fits my skin tone quite well (which makes me question why I wasn't born a natural redhead, heh) Another question: Is it okay to dye monthly and should I be dying the whole head versus just dying the roots? (the standard protocol for chemical dyes) My hair seems to be even healthier this time around than last. I have naturally curly hair that is somewhat fine textured so the chemical dyeing was no friend of mine (which is really why I decided to switch to henna)
