How henna highlights happen

I was looking at my beard in the sunlight and saw that at a certain
angle a brown hair looked henna red (the gray ones are red from any
angle). I think what's happening is this: The henna coats the hair with
a transparent red coat. The light enters one side of the hair, bounces
around the back, and comes out the other as red, like a drop of water
in a rainbow. Am I on the right track?
