does lemon dry out hair?

I have just hennaed my hair for the first time and I absolutely love
it! The only problem is that it is quite dry from the process.
I used high quality henna, a fine powder, and thoroughly rinsed it
all out, and then rinsed again! I don't believe it is from residue.
I mixed the henna with fresh lemon juice and left it in overnight,
then used a natural shampoo and conditioned it.
I've read about people using boiling water instead of an acidic
solution...does that work?
