: : last week i was in experimental mood again: i tried out Fia's gelling
: : method for henna and indigo. The henna gel was fine, very smooth to
: : apply and so much i almost had leftovers. I found it a bit more
: : difficult to wash it out of the sink and stuff, though, more sticky,
: : but maybe i should mix the pectin better.
: :
: : After that success, i tried gelling indigo, and, well, i would not
: : recommend it at all! Don't know if anyone here tried it before, i
: : couldn't find it in the archives. In truth, it was a true desaster!
: : Not on my head, thank goodness - because it's consistency got so hard
: : i couldn't even put it on. That stuff looked like _frozen_ mousse of
: : chocolate, or some sort of hardening foam, very suspicious. I put in
: : more liquid to get it working again, which looked ok, but as soon as i
: : took the cup into the bathroom again and wanted to start, it had
: : thickened up again. So i stopped, threw it all away, went out to buy a
: : new box of indigo, and put it on "the messy traditional way", which
: : turned out really beautiful (think i'll switch over to keep using this
: : 2-step process for my greys at the top, they turned out almost
: : black-brown :-)
: :
: : For the indigo, i used a box of (logona-like) herbal indigo, no
: : chemicals, not the best indigo either, but i don't think that was the
: : problem. Or, did anyone here have any positive results with gelling
: : high quality indigo? I didn't check with Catherine's indigo, as i
: : didn't want to spoil her precious stuff (which was a good idea ;)

Your experience makes me wonder if a smaller amount of pectin would give the desired
result. when I used pectin in my henna, I used 25g for 100g of henna--and that was
pretty sticky--I think Ididn't add enough liquid (it was my first henna attempt), which I
presume I can still do when I thaw the leftovers. (?) At any rate I'll try.

What you tell us makes me hesitate to try pectin with the indigo and to add indigo the the
whole mix--which I was hoping to do to simplify the process. I might try a test with a very
small amount and let you all know.
