I believe that if you start with pure powders (henna and indigo) with no additives except the lemon juice (or other acid liquid) for the henna powder that that isn't a problem. Some people even add whipped eggwhites (a base) to the indigo to get it to hold better to their hair. I think that maybe if one is a base and the other an acid would they not also cancel each other out?? That is more the question that I had to start with. But I barely passed chemistry in school so I still don't understand the process here. All I know is that it made my hair soft and lustrous if you follow the procedure the way it is outlined here and be sure to rinse it out rather well when done! I don't believe that the powders themselves (henna and indigo) are inherently either a base or an acid; but it is the substances that you add to them to activate the dye release of each that makes them so. But I could be wrong, of course!
