That elusive black henna hair (questions)

I'm looking for blue-black hair, but I very much want to do it with
henna (my hair is a little on the thin side, and I like the
thickening/conditioning aspects of henna). Indigo, though, just
doesn't "stick" to my hair, even the top-quality stuff. I have very
resistant light-brown-grey mousy hair.
I'm considering mixing the red henna paste with a dark blue Manic
Panic or Punky Color hair dye for the black effect... Do you folks
think this might work?
I've also heard of chemical reactions that turn henna black... what
are they? I'll try them!
