Why apply henna before indigo?

Please don't bite if this has been answered elsewhere - I probably
haven't looked in the correct place.

Why do you need to apply henna before applying the indigo? Is it
because the henna draws/allows the indigo pigment to penetrate the
hair?

I have to say I'm looking forward to using the indigo. For several
years I've gone from chemical dyes to henna -but after a couple of
severe reactions to nasty chemicals, henna is the only way to go
now. I currently use the 'noir' henna from Lush as this is the
easiest available and very simple to use.
