My impression has been:

- Amla alone - conditions, maybe slightly "cools" tones, but no actual color
- Amla + henna during hennaing - cools henna to brown, not red
- Amla + indigo during indigoing - black

so if you are looking for browns, and plan to henna again, I would try mixing it in
with your next henna, next time, and see how much it changes your color. And then
let us know, I'm curious, too! :)
