question about making thinner mix WITHOUT pectin..

Some have suggested that maybe the pectin inhibited dye release and
thats why I got no color.

Because my hair is so damaged and on a normal day I have to be VERY
gentle washing it...I can't use a mix thats normal consistency...any
suggestion of what I could add to thin it down considerable that wont
effect color?
