has anyone gotten dry hair from henna?

Has anyone found that henna dried out their hair?
I used good body art quality henna, soaked it overnight in lemon juice and left it on
for 3 hours. The first day, my hair (which has not been chemically treated) looked
great, but since then, it's definitely gone dull and flyaway.
I tried washing it and conditioning it, but still no change. I'm about to try mayonnaise
(heard it's great for hair), but I've also heard that henna "coats" the hair and doesn't
"let" any conditioner through. However, there are so many positive reports on this site
and elsewhere about how great henna is for hair that I can't quite believe the negative
reports. So any feedback / tips / links on this matter would be much appreciated.
