How wonderful to have henna as a course of action. I am not the henna expert from this site, but I can tell you that I have been chemically dyeing my hair for about 15 years, I started very young - long, long before any grey hairs showed up! Last year I tried henna for the first time, and have been hennaing since, I have not gone back to chemicals. I miss my dark brown hair (I really loved it) but I will take strong, healthy, shiny hair over chemical crap anyday. that being said, I henna'd right over my chemicals with about a month in between my last dye and my first henna. I did not do strand tests, but I would HIGHLY urge you to do so. Just order a sample from catherine here, and mix it with luke-warm lemon juice (from bottle) let sit overnight and then apple to some harvested hair of yours either from your hairbrush or wherever. let it sit about 4-5 hours and rinse it out, you will have a pretty good idea of how your hair on your head will react. I would also suggest, you probably are already doing this, but weekly do a deep, deep conditioning treatment (jojoba oil is the best oil to use but also the most expensive) coconut and olive oil work also. heat it up, apply to hair and scalp, wash out after an hour or two. that will help some to get your hair in some semblance of shape before you henna. don't brush your hair, if you can help it. apply a leave in conditioner after you shower and untangle with your fingers - that will also help diminish further damage. also, using pure body art quality henna will keep your hair red, if you wish to go back to brownish-red, the best way I've found to do so is mix equal parts henna and indigo. for instance, I have shoulder length hair and I mix 100grams of henna and 100grams of indigo together and apply to hair for 4 hours. I get a nice dark brownish red color. remember dye release for henna can take up to 8-10 hours whereas dye release for indigo is usually only a half hour or so, so mix accordingly.
